Aval/Poha Upma Recipe

I always resort to instant breakfast due to lack of time. I learnt this aval upma from my MIL. My husband loves this, when it is served with tea.  A great Combination!!


Aval Upma Recipe

 Ingredients

   Aval/Poha (flattened rice)- 2 cups
   Medium Sized Onion - 1
   Green chilli -1 (half slitted)
   Turmeric powder - a pinch

Seasoning 

   Oil -1 tbsp
   Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
   Slitted White Urad Dhal - 1 tsp
   Hing - pinch
   Curry leaves - a sprig

Garnishing 

Finely chopped coriander leaves -1 tbsp

Preparation

Chop the onions in small cube shapes and chop the curry leaves

Method

1. Heat a tbsp of oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add urad dhal, hing and curry leaves.

2. Add finely chopped onions, green chillies. Once the onion becomes translucent, add turmeric powder and salt.

3. As the aval i used is medium soft, i washed once before adding to the seasoned items and dried the water immediately.

4. Add soaked aval/poha Cook for 1-2 minutes and turn off the flame.

5. Garnish with coriander leaves. Delicious Aval Upma is ready.

Variants and Tips

  • Seasoning - add jeera/jeera powder or add sambar powder
  • Add tomatoes with onions
  • Make sure your aval is soft before adding to the upma.
  • Filling breakfast - include veggies - peas, potato, carrots and beans
  • Sprinkle grated coconut at the end for extra crunch.
